All these and other questions will come before you at one time or another. But it is impossible to give an answer that will satisfy each of these questions. How deep can devotion be depends on how deep an experience you have gone through. Devotion can be fathomless and can be very superficial, it is in the heart, it depends on your ability to love and care, on your outlook towards cultivation.

But most are born blind! Many have eyes that see not and they live in a dream so that the truth of reality is not seen. They are blind to the path that is before them that will lead them to freedom from all the sufferings of existences. They choose to be blind to the teachings even though they provide the means to perpetual bliss. For that matter, all are deaf too and so too are all unable to utilise their senses properly.

To rely on external help to hold your devotion, faith and practice is to be shallow in mental capacity. Only self help can draw the inspiration that will remain firm and lasting. Develop the mind and see the world with open eyes, with right views and then the truth of suffering will be real. Once awakened, one will put aside worldly interests and pay heed to the developing of spiritual interests and then devotion can be very deep, developed easily and maintained for lifetimes to come! This is the wisdom path that you have chosen. It is difficult to seek and therefore difficult to attain but once sought you are on the right path.
