It is from one’s own heart that any divinity can manifest. Wilfully one invokes his ‘yidam’ each day and practises the method of communication so that oneness with ‘yidam’ is felt. This will remind one that the day should be lived in purity and wholesomeness, because the ‘yidam’ is sitting in his heart. All negative karma creating activities should cease and causes of happiness should be practised, so that the entire day will be a beneficial one.
To reduce one’s searching for the ‘true deity within oneself’, it is allowed that one may wish for a certain ‘deity’ to reside in his mind. But such a deity, must be an enlightened being, a Buddha or His aspects so that one’s aspiration for practice will be the highest and noblest. For that, it is easier that those who wish to practise compassion and loving kindness with the view of attaining Bodhisattvahood, should accept “Kuan Yin” as their yidam. Once this is accepted, there is no need for them to wonder who their yidams are and therefore, reduce distracting thought in their minds. Having chosen the ‘deity’ one must live as pure as possible so that the relationship of oneself and deity become very close. To live purely is not to live to find faults with the world and be angry with them. Those who have not understood this point will find that the whole world is a pain to them, that all others are impure and therefore should not be associated with, for all that they say and do are impure or unholy. They will then live with anger and are unable to learn to forgive. Then they become so difficult with others that they even become impossible with themselves and they either become an extremist or go crazy. Without discovering the true meaning of impurity or purity, they formed erroneous views and their practice is harmful.
Those who live in purity, with full understanding, merely recognise what is good or bad, and so on, they will then refrain from doing evil and practise what is good. But they will feel pitiful for the erring ones and apply skilful means to help them, to patiently show them the right way to live, or even impart Dharma to them. They do not hate the wicked, they do not fear evil, they have understood that this is a world where evil and goodness must exist together, that evil can be goodness if rightly understood. They will not fight the world, for the world is neutral, they will not curse the evil ones for they are already suffering within their minds, they will live to make the world a better and happier place for everyone, they will then be able to be happy even in the most difficult of situations. These pure minded ones are full of warmth, of love and their calm states will not be easily shaken!
