A charitable heart is an outflow of the heart of a Bodhisattva. There are many aspects to a Bodhisattva, and charity is one of them. It must not be forced; it must be spontaneous. It must arise out of purity of intention, and then the act that emanates is a charitable one.
You must spend some time understanding the true meaning of charity so that all future acts will be charitable in nature. It will not be easy for one to be truly charitable; therefore, one should begin to practise charity constantly and observe how the heart and mind respond to each act. To be happy in seeing happiness in the faces of others—that is real joy, unselfish joy, and the bliss of joy. Only when the truth has been experienced does one understand what Sympathetic Joy is.
