Each miserable case that you witness is not merely to show what suffering is, but to stir your heart so that you may know what compassion is and develop the Thought of Awakening to receive the energy of compassion.
One cannot be a true Kuan Yin disciple when altruism is absent. One must make selflessness and compassion an active aspect of practice. Seeing misery, and recognising that it affects every living being, helps remind one of the realities of suffering within cyclic existences; it helps to do away with discrimination and nurture the gentle heart.
What the world needs is more people with such kind and gentle hearts, for without them, love cannot manifest.
