That is why it is so important to seek knowledge, and with proper application of the knowledge gained, one will be able to overcome all kinds of difficulties by being forewarned. Reading is important. Read with patience and learn to understand the deeper meanings through contemplation.
Being in a state of doubt may cause significant setbacks. Attending Dharma Talks and discussions will help. It does not matter if you find it very hard to understand because of the depth of philosophy, the profound meanings behind each word or sentence, or the foreign language or terms used. Even if just a single line or word brings meaning to you during the entire discussion, you would have gained immensely. You will be able to prosper by applying even a little of what you have understood to your life. Regularly attending Dharma Talks, combined with steady efforts in reading, will eventually enrich your practice and bring great meaning to your life.
In any case, you will feel that you are participating in the Talks even if you do not fully understand the entire session. Attending Dharma Talks is therefore a good practice, but such opportunities may not always be easily available.
Paradoxically, doubt can also be a catalyst for growth. Doubting will make you think more vigorously, and with effort and determination, you will surely arrive at some answers that will give you proper insight, allowing you to overcome the problem and return to the path with renewed faith.
Many people become confused when they are exposed to other teachings. It is good to be confused; it is good to hear the teachings of other faiths. It is necessary to be exposed to all kinds of teachings so that one's faith in their own religion and in themselves can be tested. To maintain a very narrow view of the world will not bring anyone wisdom. Being able to listen and gain a full understanding of the world’s teachings will make you a person of wisdom, especially when you can see that the essence of each teaching is the same, though the methods of teaching and practice may differ due to environmental and cultural conditions. However, overcome confusion through sincere seeking. Seek from within, not from without. Seeking from within is difficult and requires much effort and perseverance, because you must depend on yourself, your own cultivation, and your own discipline of the mind. Seeking from without is much easier and more convenient, but you will often end up accepting the views and interpretations of others. You may become impressed by those who seem wise, who can speak and express themselves well, and you may be attracted by petty miracles that can inspire your faith. However, you are likely to have weak faith because you have not developed understanding within your own mind through your own effort!
What sort of person do you prefer to be? Do you depend on others to give you understanding or answers to your doubts and problems, or do you rely on yourself to seek the answers? To be a disciple on the Buddhist Path, you must seek within!
